Lacquer boxes
Russian Lacquer boxes are very delicate artwork, a tradition passed down from generation to generation.
Lacquer miniatures originate from tiny Russian villages northwest of Moscow where villagers work together to create their unique designs. Artisans craft these collectible items with distinctive, intricately hand-drawn miniature paintings that are unique to each artist.
No two drawings are alike and each artisan signs their unique artwork. To paint their detailed pictures, masters use high magnifying glasses and squirrel hair brushes with tips as thin as a needlepoint. Richly vibrant colors on striking dark background, with an underlay of gold leaf or mother-of-pearl, enhance the radiance of these beautiful artworks. They are called “small miracles” all around the world.
Enjoy this exquisite masterwork for a lifetime, because the box itself is made of papier-mâché, a material that can withstand changing atmospheric conditions and avoid crackling.
