Labor Day, always the first Monday in September, is dedicated to the social
and economic achievements of American workers in respect and appreciation
for the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and
well-being of this country. This holiday is designated to value the everyday
work we do, in or outside of the home.
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in
New York City.
Knights of Labor held a celebration and parade in honor of
the working class. Twenty thousand workers paraded up Broadway with banners
that read "Labor Creates All Wealth," and "Eight Hours for Work; Eight hours
for Rest; Eight Hours for Recreation!" In honor of workers, on June 28,
1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each
year a legal holiday.
