-Halloween is one of the oldest holidays with origins going back thousands of years. It grew out of the medieval rituals of Celts in Europe. The Celts celebrated their New Year on November 1st. This day marked the beginning of the season of darkness and cold weather. The Celts believed that on the last day of October, the souls of the dead visited the earth. On the night of October 31, villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes, dress up in ghoulish costumes, and walk on the streets, making noise, in order to frighten away spooky spirits. The word "Halloween" has its origins in Catholic Church. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a day of observance in honor of all saints. The mass held on All Saints' Day is called Allhallowmas (the mass of all Hallows, saintly people).

October 31 became known as All Hallow's Eve, Hallowe'en, and then v Halloween, celebrated with big bonfires, parades, and people dressing up as saints, angels and devils. The custom of Halloween was brought to America in the 1840's by Irish immigrants. Dressing up in costumes and going for "trick or treating", costume parades, community parties and harvest festivals are some of the ways that Halloween is celebrated today.
